Our School History
In the heart of Bryanston, the story of the Royal Learning Academy began with a vision that grew into a flourishing reality. Founded by Chey Aucamp and her mother, Gwen Cloete, the school emerged from a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of early learning and the aspiration to prepare young minds for a future filled with boundless possibilities.
A Vision for Early Learning Excellence
Their journey commenced from a shared realization - that children in South Africa often lacked the foundational preparation necessary to thrive when they entered primary school. The desire to bridge this gap led Chey and Gwen to envision an institution that would not only impart knowledge but also foster freedom of growth and a profound appreciation for early learning.
The Essence of "Old School" Learning Techniques
As a mother and daughter duo, Chey and Gwen drew inspiration from the timeless wisdom of "old school" learning techniques. These methods are rooted in simplicity yet hold the power to create a lasting impact. They understood that a strong foundation built upon these principles would not only prepare children academically but also instil in them a lifelong love for learning.
Opening Our Doors in 2014
In 2014, RLA opened its doors to welcome its very first cohort of young learners. With just six children, it’s humble beginning marked the start of a remarkable journey. From these small beginnings, they embarked on a path of growth, innovation, and dedication to providing exceptional early childhood education.
Celebrating Growth and Success
Over the years, they have witnessed the incredible transformation of RLA. Their biggest accomplishment lies in observing how their learners not only flourish within the school’s walls but also continue to grow from strength to strength when they transition to "big school."

My name is Nelly Nyathi, and I am the Red Class teacher at The Royal Learning Academy. I have been working in childcare for over eight years. While I have always loved children, it was during my time as a stay-at-home mom in 2016, caring for my then two-year-old daughter, that I discovered my passion for early childhood education. I turned this passion into a career by obtaining my Early Childhood Education National Diploma at Damelin Institute, which provided me with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to create an engaging and nurturing learning environment for young children.
I first joined The Royal Learning Academy as a parent many years ago, and I have been fortunate enough not only to witness the school's growth and success but also to become a part of it as a teacher. Being both a parent and a teacher at The Royal Learning Academy has given me a unique perspective on how to create a meaningful connection between the school, children, and their families. I strive to bridge the gap between home and school, ensuring that each child feels supported and encouraged every step of the way.
My favourite part of working with young children is having the opportunity to shape their curious minds and watch them grow into confident little learners. I love engaging with them through play, as I believe learning through play is incredibly powerful. Children are naturally inquisitive, and by incorporating play-based activities, I am able to nurture their curiosity while providing them with the foundational skills they need for their educational journey. It is deeply rewarding to support children throughout their formative years and be a part of their growth journey.
I take great pride in fostering a warm and inclusive classroom environment where every child feels valued and respected. I believe that each child has unique strengths and talents, and it is my mission to help them discover and develop these qualities. By creating a safe space for exploration, creativity, and learning, I aim to inspire a love for learning that will last a lifetime.
In addition to my work in the classroom, I also enjoy collaborating with my fellow teachers and parents to create a vibrant and cohesive community at The Royal Learning Academy. Together, we work towards providing the best possible educational experiences for our learners. Outside of school, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, exploring nature, and finding creative activities that I can bring into the classroom to further enrich the learning experience of my students.
I am proud to be part of The Royal Learning Academy team, and I am excited to contribute to the growth and success of our learners. Watching children develop into confident, independent thinkers is the most fulfilling aspect of my work, and I am grateful to play a role in their early educational journey.
